LAN Healthcare Initiative Reaches Over 1,000 People with Mental Health and Drug Abuse Awareness Campaign at Wuse Market

LAN Healthcare Initiative successfully organized a Market Mental Health, Drug Abuse Awareness and General Health Sensitization Programme at Wuse Market, Abuja, reaching more than 1,000 traders, customers, transport workers and visitors with essential health education aimed at promoting healthier communities.

The three-hour outreach, held from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., was designed to increase public awareness of mental health, prevent drug abuse, improve occupational safety and encourage healthier lifestyle choices among one of Abuja’s busiest market communities.

Recognizing that markets bring together people from diverse backgrounds, LAN Healthcare Initiative adopted an innovative approach that combined public health education with entertainment. A professional disc jockey (DJ) and a lively clown performance attracted large crowds, creating an engaging atmosphere that encouraged participants to listen, ask questions and actively take part in the sensitization sessions.

The programme featured expert-led presentations on a wide range of public health issues. Clinical Psychologist Mr. Charles delivered a session on mental health and drug abuse prevention, emphasizing the importance of recognizing emotional distress, challenging misconceptions surrounding mental illness and seeking professional support when needed.

Intern Psychologist Miss Habiba educated participants on maintaining a healthy work-life balance by managing stress, preventing burnout, prioritizing rest and fostering healthy relationships while pursuing economic success.

Additional sessions focused on pest and rodent control, first aid and emergency response, occupational health and workplace safety. Facilitators provided practical guidance on environmental sanitation, food hygiene, fire prevention, safe lifting techniques, electrical safety and maintaining first aid kits within business premises.

To reinforce the health messages, LAN Healthcare Initiative distributed educational flyers, drug abuse prevention materials, general health information and branded pocket calendars containing key health tips. Refreshments were also provided to participants throughout the programme.

The outreach generated enthusiastic participation, with traders and shoppers actively engaging in discussions, asking questions and sharing personal experiences. The interactive format helped make important health information more accessible while reducing the stigma often associated with conversations about mental health.

Despite challenges such as background noise from normal market activities and the continuous movement of traders and customers, the programme successfully delivered its key messages to a large audience.

Speaking after the event, the organizers reaffirmed LAN Healthcare Initiative’s commitment to promoting mental health, preventing substance abuse and improving public health through sustained community outreach programmes.

The initiative also recommended expanding similar awareness campaigns to other major markets across the Federal Capital Territory, strengthening collaboration with market associations and incorporating free health screening services and practical first aid demonstrations into future programmes.

LAN Healthcare Initiative has continued to empower individuals with the knowledge and skills needed to make healthier choices, build safer communities and improve overall well-being.
